The Agro-Economic Research Centre was established on November 16, 1963, in the University of Allahabad by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperation, Government of India. The Centre was started to fulfill the following objectives:

  1. To carry on research on fundamental problems relating to agricultural economy of India.
  2. To conduct adhoc studies in the problems in which Government of India is specially interested.
  3. To give technical advice to the Government of India and State Governments of Uttar Pradesh/ Bihar in the field of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology.

However the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperation, Govt. of India has changed the Center’s coverage of area from East U.P. to all of erstwhile Uttar Pradesh now the two States of Uttar Pradesh and Uttranchal and also modified, as given below, the previous objectives with effect from 21.5.1990:

  1. To create a network for applied researches, on continuous basis, on specified Agro-Economic Problems, which are of the interest to the Govt. of India and the State Govt.
  2. To have constant interaction with Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, Govt. of India and State Govts. For identifying and undertaking research studies on emerging problems.
  3. To study the impact of various programmes for the development of Agriculture and Allied Sectors.

Thus since its inception the AERC has been discharging twin functions:

To undertake Government Sponsored Research Projects either individually or in collaboration with other Centres to study the impact of an existing policy or to formulate new policy in the field of Agro-Economic Problems of the country.

To undertake such primary and field based Research Projects on agro-economic and allied problems of the country as are fully sponsored and funded by Semi-Government and Non-Government Agencies, Bodies and Organizations.

Message from the Director

DirenctorThe Agro-Economic Research Centre (AERC) for the state of Uttar Pradesh was established in 1963 at the University of Allahabad, Allahabad by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, New Delhi. It was late Prof. A. N. Agrawal who not only provided the vision for establishing such an Institute but also ensured the much needed support and encouragement for its growth at University of Allahabad. AERC has been working as an associate institution of Allahabad University and enjoying autonomy status in its working. The Centre has completed 52 glorious years of its journey marked by both achievements and challenges. During these years, the Centre has emerged as a strong policy feedback Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India due to hard work and strong commitment of the staff in the Centre. The focus of research effort in the initial stage was on comprehensive village surveys and resurveys in order to understand the process and direction of change at the village level. Subsequently, the emphasis of research has shifted to problem oriented studies. The Centre has by now completed 188 problem-oriented studies. Most of these research projects have been taken up by Centre on the recommendation of   the Government of   India and State Governments of Uttar Pradesh. During its long journey, Centre has brought remarkable improvement in every aspects of research including methodological base of the studies. The studies have come out with useful findings and policy implications for agricultural and rural development of the states of Uttar Pradesh. Many seminars and conferences were organized by the Centre during these years. My task is to continue the past good practices and maintain its status as an institution committed to excellence in research.
